I love sharing the skincare tips and tricks I’ve picked up over the years, as well as the products I personally use to keep my skin in tip top shape, but it’s always best to get the information from the real experts. Which is why I’m excited to share some skincare secrets from a true expert, Jeana LeClerc, the Founder and Master Esthetician at Art of Skin Care. She is an absolute skin guru in every sense of the word and was kind enough to answer all my skin questions so I can share them with you! What do you think is the biggest skincare mistake people make?
JL:
Most people under cleanse and over moisturize. This causes sagging pores and premature loss of firmness.

Do people need to wash their face twice a day?
JL:
Yes. Using a cleanser rehydrates the skin. Additionally, pollution ages the skin. You don’t want to sleep with dirty skin. Washing with cleanser in the morning is a vital part of rehydrating the skin.

How often should we exfoliate and how often should you use face masks?
JL:
This depends on your skin condition and goals.  I recommend having a consultation so that we can help you determine what is best for your skin.

How do you know what order to apply your skincare products in?
JL: The general rule is to apply from lightest to heaviest. Additionally, I recommend applying corrective serums such as a Vitamin C or acid type serum before nourishing serums.

When it comes to acne treatments like mandelic acid, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide – how do we know which one to use? And if someone use multiple ones, does that work or do they counteract each other?
JL:
I do not recommend mixing acids. Our favorite acid for treating acne is mandelic because it is antibacterial, anti fungal, anti-inflammatory and brightening.  Benzoyl Peroxide can be used with acids. Again, it is best to work with a certified acne specialist. This will save you a lot of heartache and expense of trying things that do not work for our skin.

Any tips or tricks to help get rid of a pimple quickly?
JL:
Ice it for 5 minutes, twice per day.

Oils seem to be very “in” right now. If someone is acne-prone, can they use oils on their face and, if so, which ones?
JL:
While oils can help protect the skin barrier, it is best to keep in mind that the skin is made up of 65% water. Overuse of oils will stop the skin from breathing and cause water dehydration. This causes sagging of the pores and premature loss of firmness. There are acne-safe oils. Two products that we love that are acne safe are Rhonda Allison Grape Seed Hydrating Serum and Rhonda Allison Hydra Complex. I particularly like the Hydra Complex because it helps to balance the hormones in the skin and reduce breakouts. Keep in mind that you cannot use Benzoyl Peroxide and oil at the same time; the oil will neutralize the BPO.

What is one product or tool you think is totally worth the splurge?
JL:
I love the Le Mieux DermaRed. This helps penetration of product so that I am getting the most out of my serurms. Product wise, I love Rhonda Allison Bio Reform 28 on my arms, thighs, neck and chest.

What is one skincare product every girl should have in her bathroom?
JL:
Natural (non-chemical) sun protection and an appropriate Vitamin C serum for their skin type.

What are your thoughts on facial tools like gau sha, face rollers, LED devices, etc.?
JL:
Love them!

What foods should people avoid if they are prone to acne or breakouts?
JL:
Avoid supplements that contain biotin and iodine, look for non-iodized salt, avoid peanuts and peanut butter and avoid dairy products, especially the week before your menstrual cycle.

What foods can we eat to improve our skin?
JL
: Lot’s of fresh vegetables, especially leafy greens and fruits high in Vitamin C

What supplements help keep our skin looking glowy and healthy?
JL:
Vitamin C, NAC, Liposomal Glutathione and Omega fatty acids.

What is your number one skincare tip?
JL:
The sun causes 90% of aging. I know this is boring, but applying a natural SPF daily is the most important thing that you can do to keep your skin youthful, plump and juicy.
